“UNITED NATIONS COMPENSATION (COVID19 ASSISTED PROGRAM)” email is part of a malicious scam email campaign that promises users a golden box worth $5.5 million. The email contents are fake, with the email used to phish users’ personal information as well as trick them into transferring money. It’s not a sophisticated attack and is unlikely to trick many users.

The “UNITED NATIONS COMPENSATION (COVID19 ASSISTED PROGRAM)” email scam is a type of scam that tries to trick recipients into engaging and revealing their personal information. It’s essentially a different form of the classic ‘”Nigerian Prince” scam that promises millions if the recipient helps the sender (the supposed Nigerian Prince) to move money outside the country. This particular email campaign uses the COVID19 pandemic to make the deception more convincing.

The sender of this particular email introduces themselves as Hellen Steward, the newly appointed director general in charge of approving and releasing all owed foreign payments. She’s also supposedly the “special adviser to the United-Nation”. Supposedly, the recipient has been selected through a computer ballot to receive a golden box valued at $5.5 million. The email is written in very poor English so it’s difficult to understand why the recipient has been selected. However, the email explains that the golden box has arrived at Dulles International Airport in Washington DC from London. The email asks that users provide their full name, current address, phone number, nearest airport, and occupation to be able to pick up the box.

These types of scams usually try to phish as much personal information as possible. If users engage with the emails, the scammers will also eventually come up with a reason to ask for money. For example, they may claim that the package is stuck in customs and requires a payment to be released.

Users’ personal information is a hot commodity among cybercriminals because it allows them to perform elaborate scams and target them with sophisticated malware campaigns. The phished personal information ends up on various hacker forums for other cybercriminals to buy.

It goes without saying that these types of emails are a scam and no one is giving away golden boxes worth $5.5 million. Even if one were to believe the contents to be true, the sender claims to be from the United Kingdom but the email is written in very poor English. It’s difficult to decipher what email is saying so it’s certainly not written by a native English speaker.

Such emails have been going around for decades but the fact that the campaigns are still active means that some users are tricked. Users who have given away their personal information need to be on high alert because they could be targeted by more sophisticated attacks. If users have transferred money, they should contact law enforcement and file a report. Though it is unlikely that they will be able to get their money back.
