What is Javaw.exe

What is Javaw.exe?

Javaw.exe is an executable that belongs to Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE). You probably noticed it running in your Task Manager, and that is why you are reading this. The file is not malicious and belongs to a legitimate program, thus there is no need to worry about it. Errors related to this file are not common, so you should not encounter any trouble.

We do not recommend deleting Javaw.exe because it is necessary for Java-based programs, and deleting it could cause some of them to not work properly. However, it’s not impossible for some kind of malware to impersonate this file in order to avoid detection/deletion. The legitimate file is located in a subfolder in C:\Program Files, so if you encounter it there, it’s the legitimate file. However, if you notice if placed in other places, we would recommend you scan your device with anti-malware software.

Should you delete Javaw.exe?

Deleting the legitimate file is not recommended because that would cause some programs to not work properly. But because it’s possible for malware to impersonate legitimate files, anti-malware should always be active on your computer. This is particularly important if you are unfamiliar with the signs of malware. A credible security tool would detect malware as it is coming in, and prevent it from doing anything. And if malware is already inside, the anti-malware tool would get rid of it. So scan your computer, and if Javaw.exe comes up as threat, remove it.
