you-just-won-prize.com is a high-risk website that’s pushing a scam that tricks users into agreeing to see ads on the desktop. Browsers have a “Show notifications” feature that allows websites to send users notifications when they’re not visiting the site. For example, a news website may suggest that users allow it to send notifications so that it could show notifications for important news on users’ desktops. It’s a convenient feature in some cases. Unfortunately, scammers and cyber criminals are misusing the feature to spam users with advertisements.
The way the scam works is very simple. Users are first redirected to a website, you-just-won-prize.com is this case, either by the site they were visiting or by adware. The site displays a message that in order to access the site, users need to press Allow in the pop-up window that says “you-just-won-prize.com wants to show notifications”. If users press Allow, they start seeing “notifications” on their desktops. The ads appear bottom-right corner of the screen, which is a problem because that is where legitimate system/program notifications pop-up. Users may end up confusing the two, which could lead to scams and even malware infections.

Pressing “Allow” allows ads to be shown on your desktop
When you get redirected to the site, it will say that “You need to Allow in order to continue”. A browser notification will also appear, saying “you-just-won-prize.com wants to shown notifications”. If you press “Allow”, you will start seeing advertisements on your desktop. Like we said above, this notifications feature is legitimate and can be helpful in some cases. However, it is now misused to expose users to as many questionable ads as possible.
The most worrisome thing about questionable sites using this feature is the fact that the ads appear bottom-right corner of the screen, where legitimate system/program notifications appear. You may see ads purposely made to appear like actual system notifications. For example, a fake notification may say that you need to download and install an update. If you engage with the fake notification and download the “update”, you could end up with a serious malware infection.
If you have pressed “Allow”, you need to revoke the permission immediately. Until you do, avoid interacting with any ads or notifications.

Step 1. Uninstall you-just-won-prize.com and related programs.
