Remove SpeedyLook browser hijacker

SpeedyLook is a browser hijacker, advertised as a browser extension that will improve the browsing experience. Upon installation, it hijacks the browser, sets potterfun.com as the default search engine, and tries to redirect users to sponsored websites to generate revenue. It’s not a dangerous infection but you will want to remove SpeedyLook browser hijacker sooner rather than later.

Once the SpeedyLook browser hijacker is installed, you will immediately notice changes to your browser settings. Browser hijackers are known for making unwanted changes to browser settings, but at least that makes them very obvious infections. SpeedyLook takes control of your browser by changing your homepage and new tab settings to a questionable website while setting poterfun.com as your default search engine, directing all search queries through it.

Additionally, SpeedyLook will block you from accessing the Google Chrome Web Store by redirecting you back to Google when you attempt to visit the store. It also activates the “Managed by your organization” feature, which is commonly used by companies to manage employees’ browsers. Though this feature can help administrators enforce specific settings, it is often exploited by browser hijackers to restrict users from altering their browser settings.

While SpeedyLook and similar infections aren’t classified as dangerous or malicious threats because they don’t directly harm the computer, they are certainly not harmless. Their main goal is to redirect users to sponsored sites by forcing the use of dubious search engines like potterfun.com which insert sponsored content into search results. As a result, users may be led to unsafe websites that could conceal malware or promote scams.

It’s also important to note that browser hijackers are very intrusive when it comes to data collection. The SpeedyLook hijacker may track your browsing and gather certain information, including visited sites, search queries, and IP addresses. This data can be shared with third parties, which is a big privacy concern.

In conclusion, the SpeedyLook extension has no useful features, making its intrusive nature even more annoying. If you find it on your device, we recommend you remove SpeedyLook browser hijacker as soon as possible. Since manually uninstalling browser hijackers can be quite time-consuming, using an anti-virus program is recommended. After you successfully remove SpeedyLook, your browser will revert to its normal settings, allowing you to use your browser like normal.

How do browser hijackers install on a computer?

Infections like browser hijackers and adware are frequently found on websites that offer free program downloads, often disguised as legitimate applications to trick users into installing them. This is why it’s important to research programs before downloading/ installing them. A simple search with a search engine like Google can help you determine whether a program is safe or not. If you find several results recommending you avoid the program, do not download it.

In many cases, browser hijackers get installed through a method known as software bundling. This deceptive method allows these unwanted programs to be added to popular free programs as additional offers. While these offers are technically optional, users need to manually deselect them during installation to prevent them from installing. Unfortunately, these additional offers are always hidden in settings that users typically do not use. This is just one of the reasons why software bundling is a rather controversial installation method.

The offers are optional and it’s not difficult to deselect them. By paying attention during the installation process, you can easily avoid unwanted installations. When given the choice, always opt for Advanced (Custom) settings rather than Default (Basic). The installation window will suggest Default settings, but if you do that, all additional offers will be permitted to be installed automatically. In contrast, Advanced or Custom settings will let you review all of the added offers and choose what to keep and what to block. We recommend opting out of all added offers since legitimate programs don’t use this method of installation—those that do are often flagged as potential threats by anti-virus software.

Allowing these extra offers to be installed will clutter your computer with unwanted programs, and they will cause various issues. Once installed, these junk programs can be persistent and difficult to remove. It’s far easier to uncheck a few boxes during installation than to deal with fully installed hijackers and adware once they’re fully installed.

How to remove SpeedyLook browser hijacker

Although browser hijackers are not typically classified as serious infections, it is still advisable to use an anti-virus program to remove SpeedyLook browser hijacker from your computer. These types of infections, including browser hijackers and adware, can be persistent, so it’s often easier to let an anti-virus program handle the removal process. Once you remove SpeedyLook browser hijacker, you will be able to change your browser settings as usual.
