Mr Beast Giveaway POP-UP Scam refers to a fake giveaway that prompts users to download a potentially dangerous program onto their computers and provide certain information, such as an email address associated with a PayPal account. The scammers are impersonating a widely popular YouTuber MrBeast who is known for videos in which he donates large sums of money and gives away expensive items and tech. This particular scam claims that MrBeast is giving $1000 to random subscribers of his, provided they download the offered program. Considering that MrBeast does reward random people with thousands of dollars on a regular basis, it’s not difficult to see that more susceptible people may fall for this scam. It goes without saying that the scam has nothing to do with the actual MrBeast.

 

The way this scam works is users are randomly redirected to a website that displays an image of MrBeast and claims that $1000 has been reserved for them because they are a subscriber. Scrolling down the page reveals instructions on how to receive the supposed $1000, as well as fake comments talking about what the supposed winners will do with the money they have won. Users are asked to click on a link that will lead them to a download page where they will be instructed to download a program. Users are also asked to put in an email address associated with their PayPal account, suggesting this is a phishing type of scam with financial gain being the main purpose.

The program that users download from this scam is more than likely some kind of malware or at the very least, a potentially malicious program. It’s difficult to say which malware or PUP, in particular, the scam is spreading because it changes quite regularly. If the main purpose is phishing, the malware may be a kind of keylogger that will record keystrokes and display fake login pages for users to put in their login credentials. This could lead to hijacked accounts and money theft.

It should be mentioned that giveaways that appear in this kind of format are always fake. You will never be redirected randomly and shown a legitimate “You have won” message because it does not work that way. If you were, in fact, a winner of some kind of giveaway or competition, you would be informed via legitimate channels, such as social media accounts that actually belong to the people organizing the whole thing. Do not engage with random redirects and never provide your personal or any other kind of information.
