InstantQuest is a browser hijacker that’s advertised as a useful extension that will somehow improve the browsing experience. If installed, it will make unwanted changes to users’ browsers, including setting boyu.com.tr as the default search engine. The browser hijacker will try to redirect you to sponsored websites but should not directly harm the computer.
InstantQuest browser hijacker will change your browser’s settings as soon as it is installed. Browser hijacker changes to browsers are very obvious so it’s difficult to miss an infection. In this particular case, InstantQuest will set a questionable website as your homepage and new tabs. It will also set boyu.com.tr as the default search engine. This means that all your searches will go through it. The InstantQuest hijacker may also block you from accessing the Google Chrome Web Store by redirecting to Google every time users try to access it. What’s more, the hijacker enables the “Managed by your organization” feature.
“Managed by your organization” is actually a legitimate feature, and is sometimes used by companies to manage employees’ browsers. Administrators can block access to certain websites, implement setting changes more easily, etc. But while it can be a convenient feature for administrators, it’s also misused by browser hijackers to prevent users from making changes.
InstantQuest and similar browser hijackers are generally not classified as dangerous infections because they do not directly damage the computer. However, a hijacker’s main goal is to redirect users to sponsored websites, and not all of the sites will be safe. Hijackers do this by forcing users to use dubious search engines (in this case boyu.com.tr), which insert sponsored content into search results. Those sponsored results could potentially lead to dangerous websites, including ones that conceal malware or promote scams.
One important thing we need to mention about browser hijackers is how intrusive they are when it comes to data collection. The hijacker will track you as you’re browsing and collect large amounts of data, including what sites you visit, what you search for, and your IP address. This information is also commonly shared with third parties.
The extension extension is completely useless and has no redeemable features, which is why there is no reason to tolerate any kind of data collection. If you find it installed on your device, remove InstantQuest immediately. These browser hijackers can be tricky to get rid of manually so using an anti-virus program is a good idea. Your browser will go back to normal once you delete InstantQuest from your device.
How do browser hijackers install on a computer?
It’s important to remember that downloading copyrighted content for free can lead to various infections. This is especially common when trying to download movies, TV series, video games, etc. for free. Pirating copyrighted content is not just theft, but it also poses risks to users’ computers and data.
Infections such as browser hijackers and adware are often promoted on free program download websites, disguised as legitimate and useful programs. Because of this, it’s crucial to always research programs before installing them. A quick Google search can often help determine whether a program is safe to download/install.
Browser hijackers are frequently installed via a method known as the software bundling method. This method involves adding hijackers and similar infections to free programs as extra offers. Although these offers are technically optional, users need to manually deselect them to prevent their installations. However, users are often unaware of these added offers because they are hidden in settings users don’t normally use. This is why software bundling is a controversial installation method.
The additional offers are optional, and paying attention during the installation process can prevent unwanted installations. It’s important to use Advanced (Custom) settings instead of Default (Basic) when given the option. Although the installation window recommends using Default settings, doing so authorizes all added offers to install alongside. In contrast, Advanced or Custom settings make all added offers visible and give the option to deselect the ones you do not want. We always recommend that users deselect all added offers. No legitimate program will use this installation method and programs that do are classified as potential threats by anti-virus vendors.
Allowing these additional offers to be installed will only take up space on your computer and cause issues. If allowed to install, these junk programs can be difficult to remove. It’s much easier to deselect a couple of boxes during installation than to remove fully installed hijackers and adware.
How to remove InstantQuest browser hijacker
Even if browser hijackers are not serious infections, you should still use an anti-virus program to remove InstantQuest browser hijacker. These types of infections can be persistent, and it would be easiest to let an anti-virus program take care of them. When the hijacker is no longer present on your computer, you will be able to change your browser’s settings like usual.
