What is 360 Total Security virus
360 Total Security virus refers to a security program that is classified as a potentially unwanted application. Technically, 360 Total Security is not malicious nor is it a virus but many users refer to it as such because of its behaviour and installation techniques. For the sake of simplicity, we will also refer to it as 360 Total Security virus.
First of all, it should be made clear that the program is not malicious and will not harm your computer. However, the reason it’s classified as a PUP is because it uses software bundling to install without users even knowing, and then aggressively pushes its paid program.
360 Total Security, developed by Chinese company Qihu 360 Software Co Ltd, is advertised as security software that will protect the computer from malware and other threats. In reality, it may provide fake scan results to trick users into believing that their computers are severely infected by something. To remove those detected threats, users are asked to buy the full version of the program. Without it, they will not be able to use the program’s “removal” features. Buying the program would be a waste of money because those detected issues may not even exist.
If you do not remember installing the program, we strongly recommend you remove 360 Total Security virus as soon as possible.
How did the PUP install
It is possible that you installed the program yourself, thinking it will help protect your system from threats. If that is the case, we suggest you start doing research prior to installing programs, as a simple search with Google of 360 Total Security would have provided results recommending its removal.
If you do not remember installing it, it could have entered via software bundling. It may have been attached to a free program you installed as an extra offer, and you did not notice. Those extra offers are permitted to install alongside programs automatically, unless users manually deselect them. However, since most users don’t even notice them, they can’t deselect them.
In the future, when you’re installing freeware, you need to opt for Advanced (Custom) settings. Unlike Default, those settings will make all extra offers visible and you will be able to deselect all of them. We strongly suggest deselecting all offers whenever you’re installing freeware because they will be of no use to you, even if they may appear useful at first sight. Programs that use software bundling should not be permitted to install.
Should you delete 360 Total Security virus
The program will start pestering you with notifications about supposed infection on your computer immediately after installation. Overall, 360 Total Security looks like a regular anti-virus program but you will likely notice that its scan results have a lot of problems and viruses detected. These scans results will not necessarily be legitimate and may be a scare tactic to encourage you to purchase the full program, which is necessary to use its removal features. It will regularly notify you about the issues and constantly pester you about buying the full version.
In addition to a virus scan, the program also has other features like speedup and cleanup. By removing certain files, the program will supposedly be able to speed up your computer. Again, it may detect issues that aren’t actually there.
There are a lot of similar PUP that show users fake scan results to encourage purchase, though they’re usually system optimizers. We do not recommend trusting 360 Total Security to provide reliable scan results, and instead you should use a different, more reliable anti-virus program. While anti-virus software should be installed on a computer, it’s essential that you choose a good one to ensure you actually get protection.
360 Total Security virus removal
You should be able to uninstall 360 Total Security virus both manually and using anti-spyware software. We recommend using anti-spyware because that would be much easier, and the program would make sure all of the PUP’s components are gone.
However, you can try to delete 360 Total Security virus manually, but make sure you leave no leftover files behind that could help the program recover.
