nowtopsite.site is a scam website that tries to trick users into allowing ads on the desktop. To do that, it misuses a legitimate browser feature that allows sites to request permission to show notifications. However, instead of showing useful or interesting content, sites like nowtopsite.site just spam ads.

nowtopsite.site doesn’t have anything on it, besides a message saying you need to click “Allow” to watch the video. As soon as you enter the site, you will see a browser notification saying “nowtopsite.site wants to show notifications”. If you click “Allow”, the site will be authorized to spam ads directly to your desktop. While legitimate sites would show legitimate notifications, sites like nowtopsite.site display ads, some of which could be malicious.

Because the feature is legitimate, you can permit sites to show notifications as long as those sites are safe and you’re interested in their content. For example, if you frequently visit a particular news website and want to see important news without needing to visit the site, you can give it permission.

You can easily revoke a site’s permissions to show notifications in your browser’s settings. If you need help navigating the settings, use the instructions we have provided at the end of the report.

What triggers redirects to sites like nowtopsite.site

Most commonly, users are redirected to sites like nowtopsite.site because they browse high-risk websites without an adblocker. A lot of websites try to expose users to as much advertisement content as possible, which essentially means they spam ads and trigger redirects nonstop. For example, if you browse sites with pornographic or pirated content without an adblocker, you will be redirected no matter what you click on. Fortunately, if your redirects to nowtopsite.site are triggered by the sites you visit, any decent adblocker program will block them with no issues.

An adware infection could also be the trigger for the redirects. The infection itself is not particularly dangerous but the ads it exposes you will get annoying very quickly. Adware and similar infections are installed via what’s known as the free software bundling method. Adware is attached to free programs as an extra offer and permitted to be installed without your explicit permission or without you even knowing about it. The method is quite controversial, and it’s common for programs that use it to be detected as potentially unwanted by anti-virus programs.

If you want to stop these added offers from installing, choose Advanced (Custom) settings when given the option during program installation. The installation window will recommend using Default settings but if you do that, all of the added offers will be permitted to be installed alongside. Advanced settings, on the other hand, will make the offers visible, and you will have the option to deselect all of them. All you need to do is uncheck the boxes.

We don’t recommend allowing any of these extra offers to be installed, even if they seem like they could be useful. If you allow these installations, your computer will be filled with useless junk that will only cause issues. These offers can also be tricky to get rid of once fully installed. It’s significantly easier to just uncheck a couple of boxes when installing free programs.

How to stop nowtopsite.site redirects

We strongly recommend scanning your computer with an anti-virus program to check for an adware infection if you are redirected to nowtopsite.site and similar sites regularly. If adware is causing the redirects, they will stop once you get rid of the infection. You also need to install a good adblocker program.
