MyStreamsSearch is a browser hijacker targeting Mac computers
MyStreamsSearch browser hijacker is also known as a redirect virus, and primarily targets Mac computers. Because they are not directly harmful, browser hijackers aren’t severe infections even if many users refer to them as viruses. Hijackers aim to redirect users to sponsored pages and generate traffic/revenue, which is why you shouldn’t regard them as harmless infections. You will instantly see these infections once they are inside, but the installation itself will be rather sly. You’ll observe your browser behaving in an unusual way, such as redirects to random websites, sponsored content in search results, etc. Since some people are not aware of what hijackers are, they may not associate them with the unusual behaviour. But a simple google search of the symptoms and the website the redirects lead to would indicate a hijacker.
The hijacker will not only redirect you, but will also make browser setting changes. A different homepage/new tabs will greet you when you open your browser, and it might be difficult to cancel these changes. It’s because they perform those modifications that hijackers are able to redirect you.
A lot of users regard hijackers as malicious software or viruses, which isn’t the case, meaning they don’t simply install without needing your permission. Commonly, users don’t even notice they provide consent for them to install themselves. Infections like hijackers, adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) come as additional items added to freeware, and along with the free software, users end up installing the items that have been attached as well. Preventing these undesirable installation is not difficult, and the next section of the report will explain how to do it.
Even if the hijacker is not the most severe infection, you need to eliminate MyStreamsSearch. Not only will it disturb your normal browsing, malware, scams among other harmful content may be shown to you.
How does MyStreamsSearch hijacker install
In the majority of cases, hijackers are able to install because of free software. This distribution way is referred to as program bundling, and it’s simply put adding hijackers and other extra items to known free programs. Software bundling is a pretty dubious method because users are not made aware of the offers but they are set to install alongside. These unwanted installations are avoidable, however, as long as you pay attention to software installation processes.
During freeware installation, choosing Advanced (Custom) settings is the most essential part. The items won’t be made visible if you use Default mode. Opting for Advanced settings makes all offers visible and you’ll be able to deselect everything. It is enough to just deselect the items, and they will not be able to install. It does not take long to prevent these unwanted installations as you simply need to unmark a box, while it takes much more time to remove already installed infections. By paying attention when installing software, you’ll be avoiding a lot of junk from installing.
Is the MyStreamsSearch hijacker dangerous
Redirect viruses aren’t hard to notice since they hijack browsers (Safari, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox) and cause redirects to random sites. Whenever your browser is opened, you’ll be redirected to the hijacker’s advertised page, which has been set as the homepage. Your search engine will also be changed. Whenever you search through your browser address bar, the hijacker will redirect you to its promoted site and display you altered search results. Sponsored content will be inserted among the real results. Hijackers redirect you to those sponsored pages so that hijackers could generate traffic and profit. Redirects to unknown, possibly dangerous web pages is both dangerous and irritating. Interacting with sponsored or advertisement content until the hijacker has been removed isn’t advised. Because hijackers do not review whether the web pages they redirect users to are secure, you could easily end up on harmful ones. Malicious software or scams could be hosted on the pages the hijacker leads you to. So even if hijackers aren’t directly harmful to the system, keeping them installed is not a great idea.
It ought to also be noted that browser hijackers have a tendency to spy on users, and compile information about their searches, what content they interact with, what pages they visit, their IP addresses, etc. Unknown third-parties might later get access to the data and use it for advertising purposes.
If you are still wondering whether to uninstall the hijacker, it installed on your Mac without asking for explicit permission, altered your browser’s settings, and aims to redirect you to sponsored web pages which may possibly be hosting harmful content. Do not hesitate to remove MyStreamsSearch even if it doesn’t appear like a dangerous threat.
