avirabot.online is a highly questionable website that not only shows fake virus alerts but also tries to trick users into allowing ads on the desktop. If you get redirected to this site, your browser will immediately show a browser alert saying “avirabot.online wants to show notifications”. If you allow these notifications, the site will start spamming ads on your desktop.

There are a couple of reasons why you may get redirected to avirabot.online. When you enter the site, it will show a fake virus scan, supposedly by the Avira anti-virus program. The fake results will show several serious infections. The window will likely prompt you to download the offered program. Do not interact with the site as the scan results are fake.

The site will also prompt your browser to show a browser alert saying “avirabot.online wants to show notifications”. This is a legitimate feature that’s often misused by sites like this. If you allow these notifications, the site will start spamming ads on your desktop. These ads may resemble legitimate system notifications and appear in a similar place. This may confuse users, and trick them into interacting with them. The ads could expose you to potentially dangerous content, including scams and malware.

If you have given the site permission, you can easily revoke it in your browser’s settings. Instructions will be provided at the end of this report.

Why are you redirected to sites like avirabot.online?

You may be redirected to sites like avirabot.online for several reasons. In some cases, an adware infection is the trigger. But most commonly, users are redirected when browsing high-risk websites. Certain sites try to expose users to as much advertisement content as possible. That means spamming ads and triggering redirects. Sites that have pirated or pornographic content are particularly guilty of this. Clicking on anything on those sites can trigger a redirect. Fortunately, a good adblocker program easily blocks both redirects and regular ads.

Random redirects can also be triggered by an adware infection. It’s not a serious threat, more annoying than actually dangerous. These types of infections are installed via the free software bundling method. The way this method works is that infections are added to popular free programs as additional offers. These offers are set to be installed alongside the programs they’re attached to automatically, without requiring explicit permission. The offers are always technically optional but they need to be manually deselected if users want to prevent their installations. In most cases, users are not aware of these added offers because they are hidden in settings they don’t normally use. This causes many users to simply not notice the offers, which is like authorizing them to install. This makes software bundling quite a controversial installation method.

As we’ve already said, these offers are always optional. If you pay attention when installing programs, you should have no issues preventing unwanted installations. When installing a program, choose Advanced (Custom) settings instead of Default (Basic). The installation window will recommend using Default settings but if you do that, all added offers will be authorized to install alongside without your explicit permission. If you choose Advanced or Custom settings, all added offers will be made visible. You will also be given the option to deselect the offers you do not want. It’s always recommended to deselect all added offers, even if they appear useful initially. No legitimate program will use this method to install. Programs that do are often detected as potential threats by anti-virus programs. If you allow these unwanted installations, you will only fill your computer with junk programs that can be difficult to get rid of.

How to stop avirabot.online notifications?

It’s a good idea to scan your computer with anti-virus software to check for an adware infection. Adware can be tricky to get rid of manually so using an anti-virus program is recommended. You also need to install a good adblocker program to block future redirects and ads.
