Facebook Virus 2022

What is a Facebook Virus 2022

Facebook Virus (also known as Facebook Messenger Virus) is an umbrella term to describe all malicious infections related to Facebook and its messaging service Messenger. There is a significant amount of Facebook viruses but some are more common than others.

When people mention a Facebook virus, they usually mean malware distribution via Facebook’s Messenger service. Malicious actors hijack Facebook accounts and send messages with malware in them to all contacts. When someone engages with the malicious message, their account gets hijacked as well and starts sending malicious messages to their own contacts. And so on. Users may not even realize that their accounts have been hijacked and are now sending malicious messages unless someone tells them they received an unusual message.

While Facebook is now more vigilant when it comes to malicious links, it’s still possible to encounter them. Therefore, it’s very important that you never rush into clicking on any links, even if you receive them from someone you know and trust. If a message looks suspicious in any way, always inquire about the link before clicking on it.

How to recognize a Facebook virus

Fortunately for users, malware distributed on Facebook and Messenger is fairly obvious and easy to recognize.

As we said, these malicious messages are usually distributed via messages sent by people on the friend’s list. In rarer cases, you may be invited to a big group chat with seemingly random people. If the message is sent by someone in your contacts, it will contain a link accompanied by some generic text. The text is usually some variation of “in this video belong to you?”, “Is this you in the video”, “I found a video of you”, “check out this amazing video”, etc. The messages also often contain emojis. Group messages usually just contain a link.

If you click on such a link, you would be taken to a website that asks you to download something. For example, if the text said something about a video, you would be taken to a site imitating YouTube or some other known video site. You would be shown a video loading but get a message asking you to download some extension in order to continue watching. If you download whatever’s offered, your computer would likely become infected with some kind of malware. Because a lot of different infections are distributed this way, it’s difficult to say which malware you could end up with. It’s commonly potentially unwanted programs, key loggers, trojans, etc. We should mention that you should never download anything from random websites. Be skeptical of weird alerts saying you should download something to access content or watch a video. If you need an extension or a program, always use official websites or sources to download them. Never trust random sites you’re redirected to.

You can also encounter malicious links in Facebook posts and comments. Whether it’s a post/comment by someone you know or by a complete stranger, do not just click on it. Always double-check links before clicking on them.

Whether you actually need to do anything depends on if you interacted with malicious messages or downloaded something. If you received a questionable message with a link or a file from someone via Messenger but did not open or click on anything, you should be okay. But you may want to warn the sender that their profile has been hijacked and their computer is potentially infected with something.

However, if you engaged with the message by opening the file, clicking on the link, or downloading something, it’s possible that your computer now has some kind of infection. Your Facebook account could also be sending the same malicious messages you received to your contacts. Thus, we highly recommend scanning the computer with anti-virus software in order to check for malware. If there is anything, the anti-virus software would detect and remove it. If the anti-malware program does find something, take note of what kind of malware it is because you may need to take additional actions. For example, if there was a keylogger on your computer, you would need to change all your passwords because the malware could have stolen them.
