What is Driver Tonic Virus

Driver Tonic Virus refers to a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that is advertised as a driver updater. It’s advertised as a system utility program that claims to be able to improve the computer’s performance by updating the drivers. But it’s classified as a potential threat by anti-virus vendors due to its installation methods and overall behaviour.

It’s a program that can install via software bundling, meaning users may not necessarily notice it installing. If you don’t remember installing it but suddenly find it on your computer, it likely was attached to a program you installed. This will be explained in more detail later on in this report but in short, whatever is attached to a program you install is permitted to install alongside, unless you manually deselect it. It’s a pretty deceptive installation method, which is why programs that use it are always classified as at least PUPs.

Once it installs, Driver Tonic will start showing notifications about you needing to scan your computer. If you do perform a scan with it, you will be shown somewhat alarming results, indicating that there are many issues with your drivers that need fixing. The program claims to be able to fix those issues, provided you first buy the full version of the program. Programs like Driver Tonic often show fake scan results in order to essentially trick users into buying full versions of the programs.

Driver Tonic’s main feature is updating drivers, but regular users don’t need to do that. Even if you decided that you do need to do that, you should only download drivers from manufacturer’s websites. And Windows updates usually install all the necessary driver updates, so doing anything additional is usually unnecessary. Using driver utility programs is completely unnecessary and not recommended, especially paid ones. So if you find it installed on your computer, we strongly recommend you delete Driver Tonic Virus.

Software bundling is how PUPs can install

It is possible for you to have downloaded and installed Driver Tonic knowingly yourself, as it has an official website and is available for download from third-party websites. But a simple search with Google or any other search engine would have shown many results recommending not using Driver Tonic. In the future, we recommend researching programs before installing them.

But the most likely reason why it’s installed on your computer is software bundling. As we said in the beginning, software bundling is a rather deceptive installation method, which is why it’s so frowned upon. Software bundling is essentially adding additional offers to programs. Those offers can be anything, though they’re usually adware, browser hijackers and potentially unwanted programs. They are optional but the way they are added allows them to install alongside freeware without requiring any additional permission. They’re also initially hidden, and users have to specifically look for them to be able to deselect them. As is obvious by now, it’s a very deceptive method.

The most important part when installing free software is opting for Advanced (Custom) settings. Unlike Default, Advanced settings will display everything that has been added to the program. You will also be able to deselect everything. Simply uncheck the boxes of those offers. This should be done every time you install programs. Otherwise, you will fill your computer with junk programs in no time. And it’s much easier to prevent their installation than it is to later have to uninstall them.

Is Driver Tonic Virus dangerous?

As soon as Driver Tonic installs, it will start showing notifications that you urgently need to scan your computer. Driver Tonic is a driver updater so it will claim that you need to update your drivers in order to improve your computer’s performance. There are many similar utility programs that claim to be able to improve how the computer works but they very rarely actually do anything. There’s also many deceptive system optimizers like Driver Tonic Virus that don’t do anything useful but try to trick users into buying the full programs.

As soon as the program installs, it will suggest that you do a scan to see whether your drivers need to be updated. The scan results will be quite alarming as hundreds or possibly even thousands of issues will be found. This is a tactic used by fake system optimizers to deceive users so do not trust the scan results. They are either exaggerated or completely made up. If you try to use the program to fix those issues, you will be asked to first register, which involves buying a subscription. A 6-months Driver Tonic subscription costs $39.95, which is quite expensive considering you can do everything it claims to do yourself.

While system optimizers like Driver Tonic claim to be very useful in keeping the computer running smooth, their features are often things users can do themselves without any trouble. In general, system optimizers of any kind are debatable, as most users do not believe they are necessary at all.

While what you install on your computer is your decision to make, it should be mentioned that using a driver updating utility is not recommended because you should be downloading drivers directly from manufacturers. Though most users don’t need to do anything, as Windows updates usually take care of everything. So paying $40 for something you definitely do not need is a waste of money.

Overall, while it’s often referred to as a Driver Tonic Virus, it’s not actually malicious nor considered to be a harmful program. Nonetheless, it doesn’t do anything useful and is not worth the money.

Driver Tonic Virus removal

The program is detected by some anti-virus vendors so if you are using ESET, Malwarebytes or Windows Defender, they should remove Driver Tonic Virus for you. It’s also possible to uninstall Driver Tonic Virus manually, though that may take more time and be more difficult as you’d have to do everything yourself.
