BalanceStack (Mac) adware is a generic ad-supported program that infects Mac computers. It’s part of the AdLoad malware family. It’s not a particularly dangerous infection because it does not directly harm the computer. However, it will spam you with advertisements and expose you to potentially harmful content. So it’s highly recommended you remove BalanceStack (Mac) adware from your Mac if you notice it in your Applications folder.
BalanceStack (Mac) adware and other infections from the Adload malware family are very obvious because they appear in the Applications folder. If you check yours and BalanceStack can be found among the installed applications, your Mac is infected with adware. You will also notice an increase in ads popping up everywhere, even on previously ad-free websites.
The good thing is that BalanceStack (Mac) adware will not harm your computer, at least not directly. Doing harm is not its main purpose, exposing you to as many ads as possible is. And that’s why you will be bombarded with ads, pop-ups, and redirects on all sites. While most ads will be merely annoying rather than dangerous, there are some types that you should be careful with. Adware is known to show fake virus alerts that ask users to call the displayed phone numbers to get assistance from technicians. However, instead of being connected to legitimate technicians, users would have to deal with professional scammers pretending to work for known companies like Apple and Microsoft. The goal of such scams is to trick users into paying hundreds of dollars for services they neither need nor receive.
You may also encounter ads promoting certain programs. Even if one such ad catches your eye, do not download the program. First, do your research. If it’s a legitimate program, download it from an official website or an app store. Never download anything from advertisements because you will end up with all kinds of unwanted and even malicious programs on your device.
It’s also worth mentioning that adware infections track users and collect information related to their browsing. The collected information includes what sites you visit, what you search for, and your IP address. There’s no reason to put up with any kind of data collection, particularly from an application that does nothing of use and only causes issues.
The sooner you delete BalanceStack (Mac) adware from your device, the better. You can do it manually yourself or use an anti-malware program to do it for you.
How did adware install on your Mac?
Adware infections usually get into computers by tricking users. They misuse the software bundling method, which allows certain programs/extensions to be added to free programs as extra offers. So what likely happened is you installed some application that had BalanceStack attached to it. The offers are authorized to install alongside without requiring additional permission, which is why many users are taken by surprise when they notice these installations. Because the installation method is quite sneaky, it’s controversial. It’s generally not recommended to install any programs that use it.
The extra offers are technically optional so you can deselect them. However, they are hidden in settings that users do not normally use, which is why users often don’t even notice them. If you want to be able to deselect them, you need to use Advanced (Custom) settings during installation. If you use Default or Basic, the added offers will be permitted to install alongside automatically, without you even knowing. However, Advanced settings will make the offers visible, and you will be able to deselect them. It’s always recommended to deselect all offers.
In most cases, users’ bad habits are why their computers become infected. Not paying attention when installing programs is one of those bad habits. Another is not researching programs before installing them. You should always do your research before installing something, even if it’s something as simple as a Google search.
