active.exe – What it is?

What is active.exe

active.exe is an executable file that doesn’t appear to belong to any Windows core software. If you find it running in your Task Manager and it’s using a suspiciously large amount of system resources, you may be dealing with some kind of infection. This file isn’t something that you will come across normally, you’d have to check Task Manager to notice it. Even then, unless it’s using a lot of resources, it doesn’t have a very noticeable presence.

If it’s using your system’s resources, your computer is likely behaving weirdly. It’s likely running much slower than usual for no apparent reason, programs take longer to launch and crash more often, etc. Whenever you notice your computer exhibiting this kind of behaviour, it’s usually a sign of some kind of infection being present. Not all users will associate this behaviour with an infection, which is why it’s so important to have anti-virus software installed on the computer.

Because it’s not an essential Windows file and may be potentially harmful, we would recommend scanning your computer with anti-virus software to see if it would detect and remove active.exe as malicious.

Malware distribution methods

Malware can enter a computer in a variety of different ways, including malspam, torrents, malicious ads and fake updates. It’s usually bad browsing habits that lead to an infection.

If your computer is infected with malware, it’s possible that you opened a malicious email attachment. Malspam is very common, especially if your email address has ever been leaked by some service. Malicious actors purchase email addresses from hacker forums and then use them to launch malspam campaigns. Fortunately for users, malicious emails are usually pretty obvious, as long as you don’t rush to open any unsolicited emails. As long you don’t open the email attachments or click on any links, the emails are harmless. One of the most noticeable signs of a malicious email is the obvious grammar/spelling mistakes and a random-looking sender’s email address. And as a precaution, it’s a good idea to scan all unsolicited email attachments with anti-virus software or VirusTotal.

Torrents are also a very common way users pick up ransomware. Torrent web pages are very badly regulated and that allows malicious actors to easily upload malware and disguise it as a torrent for a popular movie, episode of a TV series, game or software. Unless you check everything very carefully, it can be difficult to determine whether a torrent contains malware, so a lot of users end up with infections. You are likely already aware of this, but pirating is not only illegal, it’s also dangerous for the computer.

Clicking on a malicious ad can also trigger malware to download. Certain high-risk websites have a lot of potentially dangerous ads, which is why you shouldn’t engage with them. Having adblocker when browsing those sites can also go a long way to protect you from malicious ads, especially when browsing sites that have pornography or pirated content, as they usually have questionable ads.

active.exe removal

If any kind of process in Task Manager is causing you suspicion, you should always check the file carefully before deleting it or allowing it to remain. Having anti-virus software installed would be very helpful with this, as it would immediately detect a malicious program.

If you find active.exe in your Task Manager and your computer is acting weird, we suggest you scan your computer with anti-virus software. If the file is malicious, the anti-virus program would delete active.exe for you.
